Why There Is No Single Formula

The Indian higher education system comprises more than 1,000 universities and 42,000 colleges, each with varying academic policies. The result is a fragmented grading landscape where the "correct" CGPA-to-percentage conversion depends entirely on which institution issued your transcript.

The most important thing to understand: if you apply the wrong formula to your CGPA and submit an incorrect percentage to a foreign university or employer, you may inadvertently misrepresent your academic performance — in either direction.

The CBSE/Standard Formula (×9.5)

The most widely cited formula was established by CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and adopted by many affiliated colleges:

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

This formula applies a scaling factor that accounts for the grading distribution across affiliated institutions. Under this formula: 10.0 CGPA = 95%, 8.6 CGPA = 81.7%, 7.0 CGPA = 66.5%.

University-Specific Formulas

Many autonomous universities use different multipliers:

• VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University): Percentage = (CGPA – 0.75) × 10
• Anna University: Uses direct percentage; no CGPA conversion needed
• Mumbai University: Percentage = CGPA × 7.1 (for most programmes)
• Delhi University: Direct percentage grading; CGPA shown alongside
• Pune University: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 (follows CBSE)

How to Find Your Institution's Correct Formula

The most reliable source is your university's official examination policy document, typically available on the university's official website under "Examination" or "Academic Regulations." If this is not available online, your institution's examination office can provide a letter confirming the conversion formula — which is often required for international applications anyway.

International Equivalencies for Indian CGPA

Once you have your percentage, the international equivalencies are straightforward. An Indian aggregate of 75%+ is broadly equivalent to a UK 2:1 or better, a US GPA of 3.3+, and Germany's Sehr Gut / Gut range. Below 60% typically maps to a UK 2:2 or lower.
